Launched in 2006, the Soma Midi flexographic printing press is proving to be the recipe for success at small and large printing companies around the world. This high performance, compact machine features unwinding and rewinding units located behind the central impression drum to save space and allow servicing and maintenance to be carried out from the side of the press. The reel winding system is based on cantilevered unwind and rewind shafts and can be supplied with automatic or manual loading and unloading.

One Polish company successfully reaping the benefits from investment in an eight colour Soma Midi is Wygoda

, Łomża, based PPHU EWA Strekowski SP. J. who purchased a machine in 2009. Much of its existing work was subsequently transferred to the press and new orders soon followed the investment. In 2010 the company was nominated for an International Print and Innovations Award by the Polish Flexographic Technical Association (PLFTA) for its Ekspesowa Herbatka Owocowa design printed on the Soma Press.

The 1270mm wide central impression press at PPHU EWA is used to print on a wide range of films including BOPP, OPP, PE and laminates and is equipped with automatic reel loading and unloading. “The SomaFlex Midi has been an excellent investment for us and its ability to deliver the highest quality flexographic print has greatly improved our competitiveness,” says Mr Bogdan Strekowski, Managing Director and Co-Founder of the company. Our decision to purchase the Midi model was based on extensive comparison tests with various press manufacturers and Soma customer testimonials. However

, the robust construction, fast job change-overs and unique price to equipment ratio was what really convinced us. After installation our main aim was to transfer as many jobs as possible from our other presses to the Midi because it runs far more cost effectively. Its high level of automation and fast make-ready also make short runs profitable. The benefits were immediately apparent to us with lower electricity and gas costs and increased production due to more orders and winning completely new business from Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. Modern equipment is one of the key factors to our success and purchasing the Midi was definitely the right decision for us.”

PPHU EWA produce printed films, tapes, sleeves and heat sealed bags for a wide range of applications in the food industry using high quality materials. The company is certified for direct contact food packaging and also supplies products for industrial applications and personal hygiene as well as for the household and agricultural markets. A full service is available to customers from advice on packaging solutions to pre-press

, plate production, printing and laminating. Customer satisfaction and meeting the growing requirements of the packaging market quickly and flexibly are also seen as key factors to company success as are fast order turnaround and delivery.

The company runs the Midi in two shifts between ten and eleven hours each with six to eight job changes per session. Print stations are designed for operator comfort and permit job change-overs to be carried out quickly and efficiently. Future plans at PPHU EWA include upgrading the Midi with Falcon II, a fully automatic, push button impression and registration setting system from Soma that reduces waste and operator intervention.
