VENUS ll FROM SOMA MAKES FOR EFFORTLESS PAPER CONVERTING

SOMA Engineering has supplied a 1600mm wide Venus II slitter rewinder to Czech Republic based paper converters UPM s.r.o. The system will be used to slit and rewind films and paper substrates and meet increased capacity at the company’s Sukorady production facility.

Established in 2000, UPM supplies paper in sheet or reel form to offset printers and packaging companies and specialises in short and medium quantities. Vaclav Markvart, Director says, “There was a gap in the market for shorter and medium production quantities that larger paper converters saw as unprofitable. UPM was established to address this niche area of the market. We also offer an additional sheeting and slitting service to customers that want to produce smaller quantities from their existing paper or film stock.”

“The Venus ll supplied includes a knife automatic positioning system that brings immediate job setting efficiencies,” says Pavla Kusa, Soma Brand Manager. For example, changing settings for 10 slitting knives can be achieved in 80 seconds saving at least five minutes at every job change. Perfectly smooth finished reels are achieved without telescoping through our TENZOMAT ll tension control system that allows a wide range of substrates to be processed and rewound in reel diameters up to 800mm. Because the design of the machine is so flexible no modifications are required to run paper and it can handle even the most difficult substrates effortlessly.”

“The Venus ll meets our requirements perfectly,” adds Markvart.” It facilitates production for our operators through ease of roll handling and job setting, enabling us to increase production and offer a better quality product with excellent finished reels on a range of papers from 30 to 200 g/m2. On average we run at speeds of 500m/min and the machine is capable of handling all our materials including difficult substrates such as 18g/m2 filter and siliconised papers.”
